Cookies and storage
This notice explains what this website stores on your device, why, and how to control it. It sits alongside our privacy policy, which covers personal data more generally.
What this site stores today
- This website sets two cookies of its own and uses session storage, all listed in the table below. It loads nothing from an advertising network, a social network or a third-party analytics service. When you first visit, we ask whether you accept analytics cookies. Nothing that needs your consent is set until you click Accept, and Reject is always as easy as Accept. Some posts on our Insights blog, and our Vena page, include a YouTube video. Until you press play, the page shows a still from the video, stored on this website, and nothing is loaded from YouTube. When you press play, the video loads from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube’s privacy-enhanced service, and YouTube (part of Google) may then set cookies or store data on your device under its own privacy policy.
- The site’s JavaScript is all served from this domain. Two small scripts fade content in as you scroll and stop that animation flickering on the first paint; they neither read nor write anything on your device, and do nothing if you have asked your browser or operating system to reduce motion. One measures how the site is used, as described in this notice, and sends what it measures only to this website. On the contact page, one records when the form was loaded, to help us filter out automated spam, and words the message you see if an email address isn’t valid; it stores nothing on your device. On pages with a video, one loads YouTube’s player when you press play, as described above.
- Our hosting provider records ordinary web server information about each request, including your IP address, the page requested and the time. That happens for every website you visit, is needed to serve and secure the site, and does not involve storing anything on your device. We also count those requests ourselves – which pages were requested, whether they worked, which website a visitor came from and whether the request came from a search engine or AI crawler. When you use the site’s search, we also count the words you searched for and how many results they found, with anything that looks like an email address, web address or number removed first; those words are never linked to you. We do not keep your IP address or your full browser details in those counts, and nothing is stored on your device to produce them.
Your choice
- Your choice. If you click Accept, we set a cookie containing a random identifier so that we can recognise your browser when you return and see which pages you visit over time. If you then contact us through the website, we link that history to the details you give us, so that we know what you have read before we reply. If you click Reject, no identifier is set and this website’s own measurement script stops sending anything from your browser. The site works in exactly the same way whichever you choose.
- You can change your choice at any time using the button on this page. If you withdraw your consent, we delete the identifier cookie from your browser and delete the visit history linked to it from our systems. Where you have already contacted us, the history we attached to your enquiry is kept with the enquiry and can be deleted on request (see our privacy policy).
The four categories, and what we use
- Cookies are usually grouped into four categories. The table below lists all four, what each one means, and what this site uses. It is complete: if you think we have missed something or there is a discrepancy, please let us know at data@northexis.com, or through our contact page.
| Category | What it means | What this site uses |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | These are cookies that are required for the operation of our website. They include, for example, cookies that enable you to log into secure areas of our website, use a shopping cart or make use of e-billing services. | nx_consent – remembers whether you accepted or rejected analytics cookies, so we don’t ask again. Kept for 13 months after Accept, 6 months after Reject. |
| Analytical / performance | They allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our website when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way our website works, for example, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily. | nx_vid – only if you accept. A random identifier linking your visits and, if you contact us, linking them to your enquiry. Kept for 13 months. nx_session (session storage) – counts the pages in your current visit and where it came from. Cleared when you close the tab. Not used if you reject. |
| Functionality | These are used to recognise you when you return to our website. This enables us to personalise our content for you, greet you by name and remember your preferences (for example, your choice of language or region). | None. Nothing on this site is personalised and no preference is remembered between visits. |
| Targeting | These cookies record your visit to our website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed. They are used to make a website and the advertising displayed on it more relevant to a visitor’s interests, and the information may be shared with third parties for that purpose. | None, and we do not intend to use them. |
